NISOM Employment Opportunities

Now Seeking: Dubuque Community String Orchestra Conductor

Classifaction: Independant Contractor
Compensation: $40 per rehearsal/concert (approx. 25 per season)
Start date: July 1, 2018

This person will:
• Serve as music director and conductor for the Dubuque Community String Orchestra
• Lead all DCSO rehearsals and concerts (2-4/year)
• Set rehearsal and concert schedule in coordination with the Program Director
• Determine repertoire for DCSO and procure music within budget allowance
• Communicate as needed with Executive Director and Program Director
• Communicate as needed with the members of the DCSO, including rehearsal notes and concert related information
• Designate guest artists and ringers if necessary for DSCO concert programs within budget allowance
• Be responsible for distribution and collection of music as needed

Special Skills
• Ability to work with adult amateur musicians who are at a wide range of skill levels
• Maintain current knowledge of industry best practices and standards in community orchestra management
• Maintain effective communication with DCSO members and NISOM staff
• Willingness to embrace and adhere to NISOM mission and vision
• Willingness to be a flexible and committed team-member with the NISOM administrative and other artistic staff
• Outstanding interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills

Education/Experience Expectations
• A degree in Music Performance, Conducting, or Music Education, or experience in a string orchestra
• String player preferred but not required

The Dubuque Community String Orchestra was founded in 1998 as a performance outlet for adult amateur string players. The non-auditioned ensemble currently holds one 90-minute rehearsal/week Sept-Nov or early Dec, then again mid-February – April; schedule is flexible depending upon concert schedule. Concerts usually include a Fall and Spring concert, with optional holiday or summer performances, with occasional concerts for NISOM programs such as L&MOP or educational run-out concerts.

Selected candidates will be invited to conduct at a rehearsal of the DCSO in March; decision will be announced prior to the Spring concert on April 29, 2018.
